The enclosed materials were prepared by Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC) for the fiveyear review of agreements made at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo in 1994. Catholics for a Free Choice was an active participant at the Cairo meeting, reflecting a progressive Catholic perspective on issues involving women, sexuality, and reproductive health and rights.
The enclosed booklet, Catholics and Cairo: A Common Language, examines Cairo's Programme of Action through a Catholic lens and finds that it reflects core Catholic teachings and traditions. This publication is a product of Catholic Voices, a CFFC initiative that provides a space for progressive Catholic leaders to reflect, research, and participate in national and international discourse on women's human rights, sexuality, and reproductive health.
The dossier, Catholic Voices At One With the Cairo Consensus, contains many pieces I believe you will find of interest. It includes a review of Vatican action at the ICPD, a chronology of efforts by Catholic officials to impede implementation of the Cairo Programme of Action, and a declaration from a Mexico meeting of Catholic Voices. The declaration, "Catholic Voices: Reflections from the Paseo de la Reforma," addresses key themes of Cairo-poverty, peoplecentered development, and reproductive health.
