This wallchart provides updated information on the prevalence and context of FGM/C in the 29 countries for which representative, comparable data are available. FGM prevalence varies widely, ranging from approximately 1% of women in Cameroon and Uganda to over 95 % in Guinea and Somalia, with prevalence variations within countries.
Although the practice is most often performed on girls between birth and age 15, lower prevalence rates among young women suggest that abandonment efforts are yielding results. Girls whose mothers have more education and those who live in urban areas are less likely to undergo FGM/C.
